Project: The Blackest BLACK ARTWORK “This is a very striking collaborative between the hard edge word of science and the world of conceptual art.The project has, a distance still to travel, I believe, but is it is already a vehicle for the exchange and development of ideas both at philosophical level and potentially for developing practical applications. The project has already had recognition and the artist is currently working with NASA on conceptual art works - perhaps with this project I think its 'watch this space' to see how it develops.” “A very pensive description of the value as well as the difficulties when two very different worlds meet. Through mutual respect, common reflection and determination two fields of expertise can create exceptional results and future possibilities.”
A key factor for success in innovation is the 'right' balance between art and science. Sustainable innovation is about innovative partnerships. Partnerships between different sectors. Art and design can play lead roles as catalysts to trigger innovation and to build bridges between the different sectors.
Provide evidence of your success Winner of the Ars Electronica Next Idea Award & Voestalpine Grant 2010 For several years now, Ars Electronica and voestalpine have awarded [the next idea] voestalpine Art and Technology Grant as a means of actively nurturing innovative developments and enabling very creative people to implement their visionary concepts. Regardless of whether these innovations are of an artistic, social, technological or scientific nature, all of the projects that make up this exhibition fascinate us with their extraordinary, original ideas for our future. The artwork of Frederik De Wilde was chosen out of thousands of entries from more then 70 countries. The project was widely covered in blogs, websites, magazines, journals and on radio and television. In addition, the collaboration resulted in a long term commitment between both parties to find novel strategies that can be applied as well in the scientific, industrial and artistic world. One can think of applying the dark material in photovoltaic systems to enhance the light absorption properties these kinds of systems, one could imagine to 'paint' all rooftops -worldwide- in nano black. The military could use it to make airplanes invisible. NASA is currently using the material to coat telescopes on the inside (less refraction of light results in better image quality). The film and television industry would benefit from the material for perfect keying of characters in front of 'blue' screen.
Why is your collaboration special and not a typical client-customer relationship?
The collaboration was focussed on a multi- and interdisciplinary approach. The collaboration was initially an artistic endeavor, a curiosity driven crossover project. While collaborating new ideas were generated, fusing ideas from the arts and sciences, exchanging knowledge, points of view, et al. The exchange was deeply rooted in a mutual understanding of humanist thinking and the sincere concern for the huge problems our world currently deals with. Can the alliance between art and science anticipate on these challenges? How do we connect the blind spots, respectively, between art and science? These were just a few of mere questions the collaboration raised, and will continue to do. With NASA we currently develop ultra dark artworks that can only be seen, understood or felt, by TOUCHING the artwork. Contemporary art historian, Dr. Elise Aspord finalized a research paper (read book) about the project. We are currently starting up a collaboration with IMEC (BE). Hence, one could say that the project connects and creates bridges between the art World and the academic, scientific and industrial world.
