In  August  2009,  a  number  of vacant historical buildings located in  the  ”Gängeviertel”,  an  area  of approx. 8000m² in the city centre of  Hamburg,  were  squatted  by 200  creatives  in  order  to  avoid their  demolition.  An  initiative  was founded  which  together  with  the involved  departments  of  the  city successfully developed a concept for  the  area  which  combines spaces for housing, work and for the public.

How did this process work? What barriers  needed  to  be  passed before  the  concept  finally  was approved?  What  are  the experiences  from  other  cities  in the North Sea region with regard to  the  development  of  Live-Work Environments  for  creatives? These among other questions will be discussed in this transnational seminar  held  as  part  of  the Interreg  IVB  North  Sea  region Project ”Creative City Challenge”.

Aims
The  seminar  will  discuss  Live-Work Enviromments as a means to  support  creativity  and innovation  and  showcase  some of  the  current  initiatives  taking place  in  cities  across  the  North Sea Region. 

It  will  point  to  different perspectives  in  the  process  of developing  and  implementing Live-Work  Environments  and focus on barriers and challenges in  this  regard.  Apart  from Hamburg,  examples  from different  partner  cities  will  be presented  to  show  various apporaches  on  how  to  develop Live-Work  Environments  in  a regonal  context  to  foster  the development  of  the  creative sector.

Target group
The seminar will be of special interest  to  representatives from  local  and  regional authorities in charge of urban and spatial planning, city and regional  development agencies, officials in charge of creativity,  businesses  in  the creativity  and  innovation branches, academics working in  the  field  and  people interested  in  creativity  and innovation support.
