What is is about? The goal is to create innovative and exciting plans for the surgery unit. Moreover, we are committed to a good, stimulating collaboration between designers and healthcare professionals now and in the future so that better design and thus that better surgeries can be built. The outcomes of the workshop will be part of a new book on Care and Design.
The workshop is an initiative of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and jointly organized by Centre for Architecture Platform GRAS and the Centre for Care and Architecture. The workshop takes place in Groningen. The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) hosts. Here most of the activities take place. In addition, there will be working visits to hospitals in the region and in Amsterdam and Utrecht. During the week you can design and work at the offices of architects in the city of Groningen. Each team gets its own workspace. The agencies also provide a mentor. The following agencies are participating:
zofa, pvanb architects, SKET architecture studio, Studio Bundle, Office Ritsema and Hennie Smit & Petra Morsche.
The workshop is free of charge, you will have to pay for travel and accommodation. In the case of talents from participating cities of creative city challenge compensation can be considered.
What are we looking for? We are looking for 20 to 25 fresh designers: architects, interior architects, designers and even 3D/industrial designers and even city planners. You have a University or College Diploma or are in the final stage of your education. Moreover you have an open mind and you see it as a challenge to find inspiring new solutions and designs. New to the care? No problem: we are just looking for an innovative, unbiased eye.
What will you do? The workshop covers two weeks and runs from September 27 to October 8. The first week is a study week. In this week you will get the design tasks and learn about operating rooms. In the second week you will be working with your team members on a task. Each team has its own mandate and the composition of the teams are diverse: in addition to designers there are also surgeons, anesthesiologists and other surgery professionals in your team. The teams (5-6 persons) are accompanied by experienced mentors. In addition, there is a team of Masters who regularly follow the design process with a critical eye. At the end of the week the draft designs will be presented to these Masters.
